A Democratic state Senator has submitted a bill that would essentially water down the crime of statutory rape.

Sen. Robert Jackson (SD 11) is listed as the author of SB 2091 that has the stated purpose of being:

“AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 97-3-65, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REQUIRE KNOWLEDGE AND WILLFULNESS IN ORDER TO CONVICT FOR STATUTORY RAPE; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.”

The bill adds the words “knowingly” and “willfully” to the statute, a move that would surely aid trial lawyers in their defense of child predators.
